When trying to lose weight, there is a simple equation, at least in principle anyway.
That is if you want to lose weight you need to use/burn more calories than you consume. For instance if your body uses 2000 calories a day (through normal daily activities) and you eat 2000 calories that day, there will be no weight gain or weight loss. So if you want to lose weight you need to do more activities to make the calories used a day go up. So if you jogged for 30 minutes and lose an extra 500 calories and eat the same amount of you had before (2000 calories), your body loses 500 calories for the day.
Now there are approximately 3500 calories in a lb of fat. So a person needs to lose 3500 calories before they can lose 1 lb. Therefore it will take 7days, if you lose 500 calories a day, before you will lose 1 lb.
One of the most important things I tell people is that consistency is king. Having a few good days making the 500 calories marker, and then having a bad day, where you eat almost as much as you have lost, will be harmful. I say harmful because the person may get discouraged and want to stop after not seeing any results. That is why consistency is really important, it keeps you on track so that seeing those results you are working for, which in turn fills you with happiness, solidifies your determination and renews your vigor.
So keep your goals manageable and attainable.
